Glossary / Vibe coding

What is vibe coding?

Vibe coding is building software by telling an AI what you want, trying the result, and asking for changes, without reading or writing most of the code yourself.

The phrase describes a style of work: you steer by feel. You look at the app, notice what is wrong, and say so in plain words. The AI handles the syntax, the libraries and the wiring between parts.

It works best for prototypes, personal tools and first versions, where speed matters more than perfect structure. It gets harder as an app grows, because problems you never looked at can pile up underneath.

Good vibe coders still think like builders. They describe one change at a time, test each change in the preview, keep checkpoints they can return to, and ask the AI to explain anything that touches money, passwords or private data.

Vibe coding and professional development are not opposites. Many developers use the same tools to move faster, then review the code before it goes live.

Examples

  • "The list feels cramped, give each row more space and show the date on the right"
  • "When I press save nothing happens, fix it"

Questions

Is vibe coding safe for real apps?

It can be, if someone checks the parts that matter: who can see which data, how passwords and payments are handled, and where secret keys are kept. Ask the AI to review those areas, or have a developer look before you launch.

Do I need to learn to code to vibe code?

No. You need to describe clearly and test carefully. Learning a little about how apps are put together, such as what a database or an API is, makes your requests better.
