Pick Gumroad if you're a creator selling ebooks, courses, templates or memberships, you want a ready-made profile page and the chance of extra sales from its Discover marketplace, and simplicity matters more than the fee. Pick Lemon Squeezy if you sell software, SaaS or digital products from your own website and want lower fees per sale, license keys, usage-based billing and an API. Both act as merchant of record and handle sales tax for you. As of October 2026 Lemon Squeezy is cheaper on most sales, but it's now part of Stripe and its own update points users towards Stripe Managed Payments, so weigh that before building on it.
This guide goes deeper on just these two. For how Lemon Squeezy compares with Stripe and Paddle, read Stripe vs Paddle vs Lemon Squeezy.

How we compared
We read each company's pricing page, fee documentation, payout help articles and announcements in October 2026, and worked out the fee on sample sales from those published numbers. We did not open stores or process real payments on either platform, and we didn't compare checkout conversion, support speed or approval times, which we couldn't measure fairly. Fees here are in US dollars for a seller paid in the US unless we say otherwise. Taxes are left out of the examples because both platforms collect them from the buyer. Anything we couldn't confirm on the vendors' own pages is left out.
What you actually pay on a sale
The headline fees don't compare directly. Lemon Squeezy's 5% + 50¢ already includes card processing. Gumroad's help center says its 10% + $0.50 does not include credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees, even though its pricing page says there are no hidden fees.
Working from those figures:
| Sale | Gumroad (direct) | Gumroad (via Discover) | Lemon Squeezy |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20 product, US card | ≈ $3.38 (you keep ≈ $16.62) | $6.00 (you keep $14.00) | $1.50 (you keep $18.50) |
| $20 product, card from outside the US | ≈ $3.38 (processing may differ) | $6.00 | $1.80 (with +1.5%) |
| $10/month subscription, US card | ≈ $2.09 | $3.00 | $1.05 (with +0.5%) |
| $5 product, US card | ≈ $1.45 (29%) | $1.50 | $0.75 (15%) |
Two things stand out. First, the fixed 50¢ on both platforms hurts cheap products; Lemon Squeezy asks sellers of products under $10 to contact it for custom pricing. Second, Gumroad gets much closer once you're big: after $20,000 of paid sales in a calendar month, new direct sales that month drop to 5% + $0.50 automatically.
Lemon Squeezy has some extra fees to know about: +5% on payments recovered through abandoned-cart emails, +3% on affiliate referrals, and payout fees outside the US (1% per payout via Stripe to non-US banks; 3% capped at $30 via PayPal outside the US).
Gumroad: built for creators
Gumroad is a store and audience tool for people selling digital work.
- What you can sell: digital downloads, ebooks, courses, tutorials, memberships and subscriptions (monthly, quarterly, yearly and more), with pay-what-you-want pricing and multiple versions of one product, such as PDF and ePub.
- Your store: a customisable profile page on Gumroad, a custom domain, or embedded checkout and "follow" buttons on your own site.
- Audience tools: import your email list, send broadcasts and updates, and set up automated workflows. You can export followers and customers at any time.
- For software: license key generation and lightweight DRM.
- Discover: Gumroad's marketplace, where new customers can find your products, at a 30% fee.
- Payouts: to a bank account in many countries, or PayPal where bank deposits aren't available. Gumroad doesn't support Payoneer, Wise or wire transfers. You need a $100 balance to be paid, and sales are held at least 7 days on weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules. US creators who qualify can take instant payouts for a 3% fee.
Pick it if you're a writer, artist, educator or creator who wants to start selling today with no website, and you value the audience tools and the marketplace.
Lemon Squeezy: built for software and digital products
Lemon Squeezy is a merchant-of-record checkout and billing platform aimed at software companies and digital sellers.
- What you can sell: digital products, subscriptions and software, with per-seat, usage-based and pay-what-you-want pricing.
- Checkout options: hosted checkouts, checkout overlays you can add to your own site, and a simple online store.
- For software: license key management, a customer portal and a developer API.
- Marketing: discount codes, lead magnets, affiliates and email marketing (free up to 500 subscribers).
- Global selling: 16 payment methods including PayPal and up to 95 currencies, according to its pricing page.
- Payouts: twice a month by bank or PayPal. Bank payouts via Stripe are free in the US.
Its status matters. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. Its April 2026 update admits slower support and fewer product updates while the team built Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, and says the goal is "an easy way to migrate" Lemon Squeezy users over. It gives no shutdown date, and Lemon Squeezy still offers sign-up as of October 2026.
Pick it if you sell a software product, plugin, template pack or SaaS from your own site and want lower fees and developer tools, and you're comfortable with a likely move to Stripe later.
Who should pick which
| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| First digital product, no website, want to start today | Gumroad |
| You want a marketplace to help people find you | Gumroad (Discover) |
| Courses or memberships with email updates to your audience | Gumroad |
| SaaS or software with license keys and an API | Lemon Squeezy |
| You sell from your own site and care most about fees | Lemon Squeezy |
| Usage-based or per-seat billing | Lemon Squeezy |
| You need a platform that isn't in transition | Gumroad, or compare Stripe Managed Payments and Paddle directly |
If you sell more than $20,000 a month directly, run the numbers again: Gumroad's high-volume rate narrows the gap.
Where your own site fits
Both platforms give you a checkout, but your product page, members area or app can live somewhere else. Gumroad lets you embed its checkout on your own site, and Lemon Squeezy offers checkout overlays.
If you want a site or web app that's fully yours, an AI app builder like Mythex can build it: you describe it in chat, see a live preview and publish to a URL in one click. Mythex adds a database, login and file storage when the app needs them, which covers things like a members-only library or a dashboard for your customers. On Pro (from $25 a month) you can export the code or sync to GitHub. You'd still use a payment provider such as Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy for the checkout; our guide on how to add payments to your app explains how checkouts and webhooks connect. For a first product with no audience yet, Gumroad's ready-made profile page is the simpler start.

Verdict
- Gumroad is the easiest way for a creator to start selling, with audience tools and a marketplace, but you pay more per sale: 10% + $0.50 plus card processing.
- Lemon Squeezy is cheaper per sale and better suited to software, but it's in transition to Stripe Managed Payments.
- Work out your own numbers with your real price and where your buyers are before you choose.
