Choose HubSpot if you're a small or mid-sized business that wants a CRM your team can start using this week, with marketing, sales and service tools that share one contact database. Choose Salesforce if you have a complex sales process, many teams, or specific requirements that need deep customisation, and you're ready to invest in setup. Both have free plans as of October 2026. HubSpot's free CRM covers 2 users and 1,000 contacts; Salesforce Starter Suite is $25 per user a month, and HubSpot's higher tiers add required onboarding fees.

How we compared

We compared the plans, prices and fees listed on HubSpot's and Salesforce's own pricing pages as of October 2026, in US dollars. HubSpot's page showed two prices per tier, one for monthly and one for annual billing, without saying which was which in the text we captured, so we give the range. Salesforce says its pricing page is for information and subject to change. We didn't do hands-on testing or count features line by line. We focused on total cost for a small team, how fast you can get going, and how far each one can grow with you.

Pricing as of October 2026

HubSpot

  • Free: $0 for up to 2 users, no credit card. Add 1,000 contacts, plus 1,000 records across other standard object types, with no time limit.
  • Sales Hub Starter: listed at $7 and $20 per seat a month, depending on whether you commit monthly or annually.
  • Sales Hub Professional: listed at $90 and $100 per seat a month, depending on billing. Requires a one-time $1,500 Professional Onboarding fee that's not included in the price shown.
  • Sales Hub Enterprise: $150 per seat a month, plus a required one-time $3,500 onboarding fee.

HubSpot also sells Marketing Hub, Service Hub and other hubs that share the same CRM. See HubSpot Sales Hub pricing.

Salesforce

EditionPrice per user/monthBilling
Free Suite$0—
Starter Suite$25Monthly or annually
Pro Suite$100Annually
Core$195Annually
Advanced$395Annually
Max$550Annually

Salesforce describes Starter Suite as a CRM suite with sales, service and marketing, including lead, account, contact and opportunity management, built-in sales flows and email marketing. See Salesforce Sales pricing.

What that means in practice: for a 5-person sales team in year one, HubSpot Professional costs 5 × $90–$100 × 12 = $5,400–$6,000, plus $1,500 onboarding, so roughly $6,900–$7,500. Salesforce Pro Suite for the same team is 5 × $100 × 12 = $6,000 before any implementation help. At the starter level, both cost a few hundred dollars a year for a small team. The bigger cost difference is often setup time and outside help, not licences.

Ease of use

HubSpot is known for being approachable. Its CRM, email tools and reports look and work alike across the hubs, and a small team can import contacts and start tracking deals without hiring anyone.

Salesforce is a platform as much as a product. You can model almost any sales process with custom objects, fields, automation and permissions, and there's a large ecosystem of add-ons and consultants. That power comes with complexity: many companies have a dedicated Salesforce admin or work with a partner.

Marketing and sales together

HubSpot started as a marketing platform, and it shows. If your leads come from content, forms, email and your website, and marketing hands leads to sales, having both in one HubSpot database is a real advantage.

Salesforce covers marketing too, and Starter Suite includes email marketing. Larger companies often use Salesforce alongside separate marketing tools. If you're mainly comparing email tools, see our Mailchimp vs Kit guide.

Customisation and scale

Salesforce wins when your process is unusual or large: many regions, product lines, approval chains, territories, or strict data rules. Its higher editions are built for that.

HubSpot handles most small and mid-sized sales processes well, and its higher tiers add more automation and control. Teams tend to outgrow HubSpot only when they need very specific data models or many interconnected systems.

Hidden costs to plan for

  • HubSpot onboarding fees: $1,500 for Professional and $3,500 for Enterprise, one time, as of October 2026.
  • Seats: both charge per seat or user. Count everyone who needs to log in.
  • Add-ons and other hubs: marketing contacts, service tools and extra features can add to the bill.
  • Implementation: for Salesforce especially, budget for an admin's time or a partner.
  • Annual commitments: Salesforce bills most editions annually.

When a custom CRM is the better fit

Plenty of small businesses use a fraction of what HubSpot or Salesforce offer: a list of contacts, a few deal stages, notes and reminders. If that's you, and your process has a few unusual steps, a simple custom CRM can be cheaper and fit better, with no per-seat fees.

With Mythex you describe the CRM you want in chat, such as your fields, pipeline stages and who can see what, and it builds a working app with a database and sign-in, with a live preview. You publish to a URL in one click. Free gives you 5 credits a day; Pro starts at $25 a month with code export and GitHub. See how to build a CRM or start from the CRM builder.

The honest trade-off: you won't get HubSpot's marketing tools, Salesforce's ecosystem, or ready-made integrations with hundreds of apps. Each integration is code you maintain. If email marketing, sales sequences and deep reporting matter, buy the CRM. Our guide on build vs buy for small business helps you decide.

How to run a fair trial

Don't decide from demos. Before you sign anything:

  1. Write down your sales stages as you actually use them today, from first contact to paid.
  2. Import a real sample of 50 to 100 contacts and a handful of open deals into each free plan or trial.
  3. Have two reps work in each tool for a week, logging calls and moving deals, and ask which one they'd keep using.
  4. List every integration you need, such as email, calendar, accounting and your website forms, and check each one works.
  5. Price 12 months at your expected seat count, including onboarding fees and any setup help.

The tool your team will actually update every day beats the one with more features.

Who should pick which

  • Small business, first proper CRM: HubSpot Free or Starter.
  • Marketing and sales working from the same leads: HubSpot.
  • Fast-growing mid-sized sales team: either; HubSpot is faster to adopt, Salesforce scales into complexity.
  • Large or complex sales organisation: Salesforce.
  • You need deep customisation and have an admin: Salesforce.
  • Simple pipeline, unusual process, tight budget: a custom CRM.

Verdict

HubSpot is the easier, faster CRM for small and mid-sized teams, with a genuinely useful free plan, but its Professional and Enterprise tiers carry onboarding fees. Salesforce is the more customisable platform for complex sales organisations, and it pays off when you have the people to run it. Price both for your real seat count over 12 months, including onboarding and setup, before you decide.

Questions

Is HubSpot cheaper than Salesforce?

At the entry level they're close: as of October 2026 HubSpot Sales Hub Starter is listed at $7 to $20 per seat a month depending on billing, and Salesforce Starter Suite is $25 per user a month. At the higher tiers it depends on seats. HubSpot Professional is $90 to $100 per seat a month plus a required $1,500 onboarding fee; Salesforce Pro Suite is $100 per user a month billed annually.

Does HubSpot have a free CRM?

Yes. As of October 2026 HubSpot's free tools are free for up to 2 users with no credit card, and let you add 1,000 contacts with no time limit. Salesforce also lists a Free Suite at $0 per user a month.

Is Salesforce better for large companies?

Salesforce is the common choice for large, complex sales organisations because it is very customisable and has a big ecosystem of partners and add-ons. That flexibility usually needs an admin or consultant to set up. HubSpot is generally quicker for small and mid-sized teams to adopt, especially when marketing and sales work closely together.

Can a small business build its own CRM instead?

Yes, if your process is simple and specific. A custom CRM can hold exactly the fields and stages you use, with no per-seat fees. The trade-off is that you maintain it and won't get the marketing tools, integrations and reporting that HubSpot or Salesforce include.
