Midjourney vs ChatGPT Image Generation: Which Should You Use?

Midjourney vs ChatGPT image generation: prices as of October 2026, editing, text in images, privacy, commercial use, API access and who each suits.

Mythex Team · 2026-10-22 · 7 min read

Use Midjourney if images are the work: you want a distinctive, polished look, fine control over style, lots of variations to choose from, and video from the same tool. Use ChatGPT if images are one part of your work: you want to describe an image in plain words, get readable text in it, change one detail by asking, and keep using the same assistant for writing and research. As of October 2026, ChatGPT Images is on every ChatGPT plan including Free, while Midjourney has no free trial on its website and starts at $10 a month.

Details as of October 2026 from Midjourney's plan comparison, Midjourney's free trial page, Images in ChatGPT, OpenAI's Plus and Go help pages, and OpenAI's terms of use.

How we compared

We compared what each company states on its own pricing pages, help articles and terms as of October 2026: plans and prices, how usage is counted, editing tools, privacy, commercial rights and developer access. We did not run a blind test of image quality, because "better looking" depends on taste and on the prompt, and both models change every few months. Midjourney's current default model is V8.2, released as default on July 24, 2026, according to its version page; OpenAI's help center calls its current release ChatGPT Images 2.5. Try the same prompts in both before you pay.

Midjourney: built for the look

Midjourney is a tool for making images and short videos and nothing else. That focus shows in the controls:

  • Versions and parameters. You can pick a model version, aspect ratio and style settings, and set defaults for every prompt.
  • Personalization and moodboards. Midjourney can learn your taste from images you rate, so results lean toward your style over time.
  • Editor. The web editor handles remix, inpainting (changing part of an image), pan and zoom out. On V8.1 and V8.2 these use the new Edit Model, which Midjourney says can work from up to 4 reference images.
  • HD images. V8.1 and later can render 2K images directly, at a higher GPU cost than standard images.
  • Video. You can animate images into short videos; HD video starts on the Standard plan.

PlanMonthlyYearly (per month)Fast GPU timeRelax modeStealth Mode
Basic$10$83.3 hr/monthNoNo
Standard$30$2415 hr/monthUnlimited imagesNo
Pro$60$4830 hr/monthUnlimited images and SD videoYes
Mega$120$9660 hr/monthUnlimited images and SD videoYes

Extra fast GPU time is $4 an hour on every plan. "Relax" mode queues your jobs at a slower pace but doesn't use up your fast hours, which is why Standard is the plan most regular users need. Source: Comparing Midjourney Plans.

Where Midjourney falls short

  • No free way to try it on the main site.
  • Public by default. Without Stealth Mode, others can see what you make. If you work on unreleased products or client work, budget for Pro.
  • No API. Midjourney's community guidelines say it doesn't provide an API, apart from rare granted exceptions, and that automating the service is prohibited. You can't plug it into your own app.
  • A learning curve. Parameters, versions and GPU modes take time to learn.

ChatGPT Images: built for instructions

ChatGPT Images lives inside ChatGPT. You ask for an image in a normal conversation, or open the Images section. OpenAI's help center says it can:

  • Follow instructions closely, including adding text to an image, adding specific details and making a transparent background.
  • Edit by conversation. Upload a photo or pick a generated image and describe the change, or use the selection tool to mark the area you want changed. OpenAI notes that selections aren't always precise and edits can spill over.
  • Change aspect ratio with a picker or in the prompt.
  • Start from templates, such as a poster or a logo, and answer follow-up questions about style.
  • Turn sketches into images in the mobile app.

Every image you create is saved under Images in your account, where you can copy, download or share it.

ChatGPT pricing as of October 2026

  • Free: $0, with image creation under separate, lower limits.
  • Go: $8/month, with "extended access to image generation".
  • Plus: $20/month, with image generation among its expanded features, plus "Images with thinking" on Plus, Pro and Business.
  • Pro: $100, $200 or $500/month for the highest usage.
  • Business: $20 per user/month billed annually ($25 monthly). See ChatGPT Business pricing.

OpenAI doesn't publish an exact number of images per day for each plan; limits show in the app when you reach them.

Where ChatGPT falls short

  • Less control over style. There's no equivalent to Midjourney's personalization profiles, moodboards or parameter set. You steer with words.
  • Fewer variations at once. Midjourney is built around generating a grid of options and iterating; ChatGPT is built around one conversation.
  • Usage limits you can't see ahead of time. Heavy users hit limits and wait for a reset.

Many designers use both: Midjourney to find a look, then ChatGPT to add text or make a quick, specific fix.

Commercial use and rights

Midjourney says that if you've subscribed at any point, you're free to use your images and videos in just about any way you want, but a company making more than $1,000,000 in gross revenue a year must be on Pro or Mega. The full rules are in its terms of service.

OpenAI's terms say that, as between you and OpenAI, you own the output, and OpenAI assigns you any rights it has in it.

Neither of those statements means an image is safe to use in every case. If a prompt asks for a famous character, a real person or a brand's logo, ownership of the output doesn't give you rights to those. For anything high-stakes, such as a logo you'll trademark, talk to a lawyer.

If you want to build an image tool, not just use one

Sometimes the right answer is neither app. If you want customers to generate images in your own product, such as a "make a poster for my shop" tool, a product-photo background swapper or a personalised greeting card site, you need an image model behind an API, plus sign-in, storage for the images and a way to limit how many each user makes.

Of these two, only OpenAI offers that through an API, billed per use. Our guides on how to integrate the OpenAI API and how to build an AI image generator app walk through it. With an AI app builder like Mythex you describe the app in chat, see it in a live preview and publish it to a URL in one click; it adds the database, sign-in and file storage to keep each user's images when the app needs them. Mythex Free gives 5 credits a day and Pro starts at $25 a month. If you only need images for yourself, Midjourney or ChatGPT is simpler and cheaper.

Tips for better results in both

  1. Describe the purpose, not just the subject. "A banner for a bakery's autumn menu, warm light, space at the top for text" beats "bread".
  2. Name the format and ratio. Square for a post, wide for a banner, tall for a story.
  3. Change one thing at a time when iterating, so you know what made it better.
  4. Keep prompts that worked. Both tools let you reuse them; a small library saves hours. Our guide on prompt engineering covers the basics.

Verdict

Midjourney is the better tool for people who make images all day and care most about how they look. ChatGPT is the better tool for everyone else: it's free to start, it follows plain instructions, handles text and quick edits, and sits inside an assistant you may already pay for. If you need images inside your own product, only OpenAI's API is an option of the two.

Questions

Is Midjourney better than ChatGPT for images?

It depends on the job. Midjourney is built only for images and video, with fine control over style through versions, personalization, moodboards and parameters, which suits artists and designers exploring a look. ChatGPT Images is better at following plain-language instructions, putting text into images and making targeted edits in a conversation, and it comes with a general assistant.

Can I use Midjourney for free?

Not on the website or Discord. As of October 2026 Midjourney's help center says no free trial is available on midjourney.com or Discord, and a limited trial is offered only in the niji·journey mobile app. Paid plans start at $10 a month, or $8 a month billed yearly. ChatGPT Images is available on the free ChatGPT plan, with lower limits.

Can I use Midjourney or ChatGPT images commercially?

Generally yes, with conditions. Midjourney says subscribers can use their images in just about any way, but companies with more than $1,000,000 in yearly gross revenue must be on the Pro or Mega plan. OpenAI's terms say that, as between you and OpenAI, you own the output. Neither removes your responsibility for trademarks, likenesses or copying an existing work.

Does Midjourney have an API?

Midjourney's community guidelines say that, with rare explicitly granted exceptions, it does not provide an API and that automating the service breaks its terms. OpenAI offers image generation through its API, billed per use, so if you're building an app that generates images, OpenAI's API is the practical choice of the two.

Are my Midjourney images private?

Not by default. Midjourney's Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is only on the Pro ($60 a month) and Mega ($120 a month) plans as of October 2026. Images you create in ChatGPT are saved to your own Images library in your account.
