What that means in practice: a freelancer who needs a few meeting types and wants to take payment can stay on Cal.com Free. On Calendly, the same setup needs Standard at $10 a month. For a 10-person sales team, Cal.com Teams is $120 a month on yearly billing; Calendly Teams is $160 a month at the listed seat price, less with yearly billing.
Ease of use
Calendly is the tool most people have already booked a meeting through, and that familiarity matters. Its setup is simple and its booking pages are clean.
Cal.com covers the same core flow, with a booking page, event types, availability and calendar sync, and it's easy to set up too. It also exposes more options, which power users like and some beginners find busy.
Team and sales features
Both handle team scheduling on paid plans: round-robin to spread meetings across reps and collective events that need several people free at once.
Calendly leans further into sales. Teams adds lead routing and connections to Salesforce, Marketo and Pardot, and Enterprise adds Salesforce lookup routing and Microsoft Dynamics. If your sales process runs on Salesforce, Calendly's depth there is a strong reason to pick it.
Cal.com includes routing forms on Teams and lists two-way Salesforce and HubSpot sync even on Free. Organizations adds routing by custom variables and sub-teams. For CRM choice itself, see HubSpot vs Salesforce.
Open source and self-hosting
This is Cal.com's clearest difference. Cal.com's pricing page links to a self-hosted option, its GitHub repository and Docker setup docs. If you have strict rules about where data lives, or you want to customise the product itself, self-hosting is an option Calendly doesn't offer.
Self-hosting isn't free in practice: you run the server, database, email delivery and updates. Read the licence in the repository before using it commercially. Most teams use Cal.com's hosted plans.
When to build your own booking flow
Scheduling tools are built around a meeting: pick a time, get a calendar invite. Some businesses need more than that. A clinic needs patient records and intake forms. A rental business needs inventory and deposits. A salon needs staff, services of different lengths and a customer history.
When the booking is part of a bigger process, a custom booking app can fit better. With Mythex you describe the app in chat, including services, staff, availability rules and payments, and it builds it with a database and sign-in, with a live preview. You publish to a URL in one click. Free gives you 5 credits a day and Pro starts at $25 a month. See how to build a booking app, how to build a clinic appointment system, or the booking app builder.
For a plain "book a call with me" link, Calendly or Cal.com is faster and cheaper than building anything. Calendar sync, time zones and reminders are fiddly, and these tools have solved them.
Questions to answer before you choose
A few minutes with these questions usually settles it:
- How many people need their own booking page? One person changes the maths completely, because Cal.com's free plan covers most solo needs.
- Do you take payment at booking? On Calendly that needs a paid plan; on Cal.com it's in Free.
- Which CRM do you use? If it's Salesforce and you need routing based on CRM data, look at Calendly's Teams and Enterprise features closely.
- Do you have rules about where data is stored? If so, Cal.com's self-hosting option may matter.
- Who books with you? If your clients are used to Calendly links, that familiarity has some value.
Both have free plans, so set up your real event types in each and send a test booking to a friend.
Who should pick which

Verdict
Cal.com gives more for free and costs less for teams, and it's the only one of the two you can self-host. Calendly is the more established product, with deeper sales and enterprise features. Solo users should try Cal.com Free first; sales teams deep in Salesforce should look hard at Calendly.
