How we compared

We compared the plans, prices, limits and features on ClickUp's and Notion's own pricing pages as of October 2026, in US dollars. ClickUp's page showed two different pricing layouts when we checked, including different AI pricing. We quote the main plan cards and note the difference rather than pick one. We didn't run timed tests. We compared the free plans, what a small team pays, and how well each handles the two jobs people buy them for: tracking work and writing things down.

Pricing as of October 2026

ClickUp

  • Free Forever: $0. Unlimited tasks, unlimited free-plan members, collaborative docs, kanban boards, calendar view, 60 MB of storage and 1 form.
  • Unlimited: $7 per user a month billed yearly, or $10 monthly. Adds unlimited Gantt charts, native time tracking, unlimited integrations, guests with permissions, ClickUp Chat, goals and portfolios, and resource management.
  • Business: $12 per user a month billed yearly, or $19 monthly. Adds unlimited dashboards, 5,000 automations a month, webhooks, unlimited message history, private whiteboards and custom exporting.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.
  • AI: ClickUp's page showed AI in two ways when we checked: as paid add-ons, and as monthly AI credits included per plan (500 credits per workspace on Free Forever), with extra credits at $10 per 10,000. Check the page for the current model before you budget.

Notion

  • Free: $0. Unlimited blocks for individuals, a block limit for workspaces with two or more members, 5 MB file uploads, 10 guests and 7 days of page history.
  • Plus: $10 per member a month. Unlimited blocks, uploads and guests, 30 days of history.
  • Business: $20 per member a month. Full Notion AI including the Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search (beta), and 90 days of history.
  • Enterprise: custom.
  • Yearly billing saves up to 20%.

See Notion pricing.

What that means in practice: a 10-person team on ClickUp Business billed yearly pays $120 a month. The same team on Notion Business pays $200 a month before the yearly discount, though that includes Notion AI. At the entry tier, 10 people cost $70 a month on ClickUp Unlimited (yearly) and $100 on Notion Plus.

Project management

ClickUp is the clear winner here. Its paid plans include Gantt charts, native time tracking, workload and resource management, goals and portfolios, dashboards and automations. If your team asks "who's working on what, and are we on schedule?", ClickUp is built to answer that.

Notion can do project tracking well enough for many small teams: a projects database, a tasks database linked to it, and board, timeline and calendar views. Notion doesn't list native time tracking, database automations need a paid plan, and dashboard views are on Business and Enterprise, so getting workload views and reports takes more setup. If you need full project management, compare other dedicated tools too, such as in our Asana vs Monday and Trello vs Asana guides.

Docs, wikis and notes

Notion wins here. Its editor is clean and flexible, pages nest naturally into a wiki, and databases can live inside any page. Company handbooks, meeting notes, specs and knowledge bases are where Notion is strongest.

ClickUp has collaborative docs on every plan, and they're fine for project briefs and specs that sit next to the tasks. But teams who write a lot usually find Notion more pleasant.

Ease of use

ClickUp has a lot of features, which is both its selling point and its main complaint: new users can find it busy, and admins often spend time deciding which features to switch on. Notion starts as a blank page, which is calm at first but means someone has to design the workspace.

Either way, expect to spend a few hours setting up templates and structure before the rest of the team joins.

AI

Notion bundles its full AI into Business as of October 2026, with Free and Plus getting a limited trial. ClickUp's AI pricing was in flux on its page when we checked, with both per-user add-ons and included credits shown. If AI is a deciding factor, try each on your own documents and tasks during a trial.

When neither fits

Both tools are general purpose. That's their strength, but it also means some teams spend a lot of time bending them to a specific process: a client intake flow with approvals, a jobs board for field staff, or a portal where clients see only their own projects.

If that sounds familiar, a small custom tool can be simpler. With Mythex you describe the tool in chat, and it builds a working app with a database and sign-in, with a live preview, and you publish it to a URL in one click. See how to build a project management tool or the client portal builder.

Be realistic: for general task tracking or a team wiki, ClickUp or Notion is faster and cheaper than building. A custom app makes sense only when your process is specific, stable and important.

How to test both in a week

Free plans make it easy to try both properly:

  1. Pick one real project that's starting now, not a demo.
  2. Set it up in both tools: tasks with owners and due dates, a short project brief, and a weekly status update.
  3. Ask three teammates to use each for a few days and note where they got stuck.
  4. Check the limits you'll hit: ClickUp's 60 MB of storage and 1 form on Free, and Notion's block limit once you add a second member.
  5. Price the plan you'd really need for your whole team, billed yearly.

If people keep asking "where's the doc?", lean Notion. If they keep asking "who's on this and when is it due?", lean ClickUp.

Who should pick which

  • Agency, ops or product team juggling many projects and deadlines: ClickUp.
  • You need time tracking and workload views: ClickUp.
  • Tight budget, bigger team: ClickUp's lower per-seat prices.
  • Company wiki, handbook, meeting notes, specs: Notion.
  • Small team with light project tracking: Notion.
  • You want AI over your team's documents: Notion Business.
  • Very specific workflow with outside users: a custom tool.

Verdict

ClickUp is the better project management tool and the cheaper one per seat, at the cost of a busier interface. Notion is the better place for documents, wikis and flexible databases, with AI included on Business. Decide by what your team does most each day: if it's moving tasks, choose ClickUp; if it's writing and organising information, choose Notion.

Questions

Is ClickUp or Notion better for project management?

ClickUp is better for project management. It's built around tasks, with Gantt charts, time tracking, goals, dashboards and automations. Notion can track projects with databases and board views, and works well for light project tracking, but it's at its best for docs, wikis and notes.

Is ClickUp cheaper than Notion?

Yes, at the entry level. As of October 2026 ClickUp's Unlimited plan is $7 per user a month billed yearly ($10 monthly), and Business is $12 billed yearly ($19 monthly). Notion's Plus plan is $10 per member a month and Business is $20, with yearly billing saving up to 20%.

What are the limits of ClickUp's free plan?

As of October 2026 ClickUp's Free Forever plan includes unlimited tasks and unlimited members, collaborative docs, kanban boards and calendar view, but only 60 MB of file storage and 1 form. Gantt charts, time tracking and unlimited integrations start on Unlimited.

Can I use ClickUp and Notion together?

Yes, and some teams do: Notion for the company wiki, meeting notes and long documents, ClickUp for tasks and deadlines. The cost is two subscriptions and two places to look, so most small teams try to pick one first.
