Pick Asana if you run several projects with deadlines, dependencies and reporting, and want more structure. Trello starts simpler and cheaper; Asana scales further into planning, goals and resource management. If neither fits your process, a simple custom tracker is also something you can build.

How we compared

We compared the publicly stated features, limits and prices on Trello's and Asana's own pricing pages as of September 2026. We did not do hands-on testing, and we left out anything we couldn't confirm on the vendors' own sites. Prices are in US dollars.

Trello: simple, visual boards

Trello, an Atlassian product, is built around boards made of lists and cards. You drag cards across lists as work moves along. Its newer features include an Inbox for capturing to-dos from email, Slack and Teams, a Planner for blocking time on your calendar, and AI-generated boards.

Plans (as of September 2026):

• Free: $0 for up to 10 collaborators per Workspace. Up to 10 boards per Workspace, unlimited cards, unlimited Power-Ups per board, 10 MB per file, 250 Workspace command runs a month.
• Standard: $5 per user/month billed annually ($6 monthly). Unlimited boards, AI, advanced checklists, card mirroring, custom fields, 250 MB per file, 1,000 command runs a month, single-board guests.
• Premium: $10 per user/month billed annually ($12.50 monthly). Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views; unlimited command runs; admin and security features.
• Enterprise: $17.50 per user/month billed annually, with the per-user cost estimated by team size. Adds organisation-wide permissions and Atlassian Guard.

"Command runs" are Trello's automation actions, built into every board.

Strengths: very easy to learn; cheap entry price; a large library of Power-Ups (integrations); good for personal and small-team workflows.

Limits: the Free plan caps boards per Workspace; timeline, calendar and dashboard views need Premium; big multi-project portfolios aren't its focus.

Asana: structured projects that scale

Asana organises work into tasks and projects you can view as lists, boards, calendars, timelines and Gantt charts. It adds portfolios, goals and resource management for teams coordinating many projects, and AI features it calls AI Teammates, Asana Dash and AI Studio.

Plans (as of September 2026):

• Personal: free forever, for one or two people. Unlimited tasks and projects, list, board and calendar views, 100 MB per file, 100+ integrations.
• Starter: $10.99 per user/month billed annually ($13.49 monthly). Timeline and Gantt views, reporting dashboards, unlimited automations, forms, custom fields and templates, unlimited free guests. AI Studio includes 50,000 credits per billing account a month.
• Advanced: $24.99 per user/month billed annually ($30.49 monthly). Unlimited portfolios, goals, resource management, approvals and proofing, time tracking, and Salesforce, Tableau and Power BI connections.
• Enterprise: contact sales, with SAML, SCIM and capacity planning.

Asana says yearly billing saves up to 18%.

Strengths: handles many projects and dependencies well; strong reporting; free guests on paid plans; goals and portfolios for leadership views.

Limits: more to learn than Trello; the free plan is for one or two people only; paid plans cost roughly twice Trello's at each tier.

Key differences that matter

Simplicity vs structure. Trello is a board. That's its strength: anyone gets it at once. Asana is a project system with a board as one view. If you need dependencies, timelines and workload views, Asana has them lower down its price list.

Price. At every tier Trello is cheaper. Standard ($5) vs Starter ($10.99), Premium ($10) vs Advanced ($24.99), billed annually.

Free plans. Trello's Free plan works for a small team of up to 10 collaborators. Asana's free Personal plan is designed for one or two people.

Views. Trello's calendar, timeline and dashboard views are on Premium. Asana has calendar on free and timeline and Gantt from Starter.

Automation. Trello counts automation runs on Free and Standard. Asana includes unlimited automations from Starter.

Guests. Asana includes unlimited free guests on Starter, useful for clients and contractors. Trello allows single-board guests on Standard and multi-board guests on Enterprise.

Who should pick Trello

• Small teams, freelancers and individuals who want a clear visual board.
• Simple pipelines: content calendars, hiring stages, sales leads, personal to-dos.
• Teams on a tight budget who want AI and automation at a low per-user price.
• Teams already using other Atlassian products.

Who should pick Asana

• Teams running several projects at once with deadlines and dependencies.
• Managers who need dashboards, portfolios and goals to see progress.
• Agencies working with many clients as guests.
• Organisations that want resource management and time tracking (Advanced).

When a custom tracker makes sense

Both tools are general-purpose. Sometimes a team's process is specific enough that neither fits: a production workflow with custom stages and rules, a job tracker tied to your own client records, or a board that clients see with only their own jobs.
