Choose Freshdesk if you want an email-first ticketing help desk with SLAs and routing at a lower top-tier price, and cheaper AI add-ons: as of October 2026, Freshdesk Pro is $55 per agent a month and Enterprise is $89, both billed annually, with Freddy AI Copilot at $29 per agent. Choose Zendesk if you need email, live chat, messaging and phone in one product from the middle tier up, a mature help centre in 40+ languages, and the largest ecosystem; Suite Team is $55 and Suite Professional is $115 per agent a month billed annually. At the entry level both cost $19 per agent a month billed annually, so the choice comes down to channels, AI pricing and how you'll grow.

How we compared
We compared the plans, features and prices listed on Zendesk's and Freshworks' own pricing pages in October 2026, in US dollars, at both annual and monthly billing. We did not run a hands-on trial or measure support quality. Plan names don't line up neatly, so we matched them by price and position. Where one vendor lists a feature and the other's page doesn't mention it, we say "not listed" rather than assume it's missing.
Pricing, tier by tier
Entry: Support Team vs Growth ($19)
Both cost $19 per agent a month billed annually. Month to month, Freshdesk Growth is a little cheaper ($23 vs $25).
- Zendesk Support Team is email ticketing with routing, automations, pre-written responses and dashboards. Messaging is limited to a web widget, and the help centre offers article recommendations.
- Freshdesk Growth includes ticketing and a shared inbox, a customer portal and knowledge base, out-of-the-box reporting, threads and tasks, and roles and permissions.
Edge: Freshdesk, for including a customer portal and knowledge base at the entry price.
Middle: Suite Team vs Pro ($55)
Both are $55 billed annually; monthly, Freshdesk Pro is $66 and Zendesk Suite Team is $69. They go in different directions:
- Zendesk Suite Team adds channels: live chat with unlimited concurrent chats and two departments, a help centre in one language, and voice with voicemail and group routing (phone numbers and text messages are add-ons).
- Freshdesk Pro adds help desk depth: a multilingual help desk, custom dashboards, intelligent routing, multiple SLA policies and external collaborators.
Edge: depends. If customers reach you by chat or phone, Zendesk Suite Team covers it. If you're email-first and need SLAs, Freshdesk Pro gives you that where Zendesk only adds SLAs on Suite Professional.
Upper: Suite Professional ($115) vs Enterprise ($89)
- Zendesk Suite Professional adds SLAs, IVR phone menus, overflow and after-hours routing, a help centre in 40+ languages with up to 5 help centres, unlimited chat departments, up to 100 light agents, and a sandbox as an add-on.
- Freshdesk Enterprise adds skill-based routing, Freddy AI Insights, a sandbox, audit logs and IP and domain allow-listing.
Edge on price: Freshdesk, at $26 less per agent a month billed annually. Edge on channels and help centre: Zendesk.
AI: how each one charges
AI is now where the bills diverge most.
Zendesk bills its AI agents per automated resolution (AR): a conversation the AI resolved without a human. As of October 2026, plans include 5 ARs per agent a month (10 on Suite Professional). Beyond that, Zendesk lists $1.50 per AR committed in advance or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Copilot, its assistant for human agents, is $50 per agent a month paid yearly on Professional and above.
Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions, then sells 100 more for $49, about $0.49 a session. Freddy AI Copilot is $29 per agent a month billed annually on Pro and Enterprise.
A rough way to compare: a 10-agent team on Zendesk Suite Professional gets 100 ARs a month included; on Freshdesk the 500 sessions come once per account, per Freshworks' FAQ, and after that you buy packs. Note that a "resolution" and a "session" aren't the same thing, so run your real volume through both trials before trusting a spreadsheet. On copilots, Freshdesk is clearly cheaper: $29 vs $50 per agent.
Channels: email-first vs omnichannel
This is the biggest practical difference.
Zendesk Suite bundles email, messaging and live chat, a help centre and voice from Suite Team upwards. One product, one bill, one agent workspace.
Freshdesk is email-first. For chat, messaging and phone in the same help desk, Freshworks sells Freshdesk Omni: Growth $29, Pro $79 and Enterprise $119 per agent a month billed annually, as of October 2026, with the same 500 included AI sessions. So the fairer channel-for-channel comparison is Zendesk Suite vs Freshdesk Omni:
| Tier | Zendesk Suite | Freshdesk Omni |
|---|---|---|
| Entry omnichannel | Suite Team $55 | Growth $29 |
| Middle | Suite Professional $115 | Pro $79 |
| Top published | Enterprise: sales | Enterprise $119 |
Freshdesk Omni is cheaper at every published tier. Zendesk's case rests on its maturity, its help centre and voice features, and its size of ecosystem.
Who should pick which
Pick Zendesk if:
- Customers contact you by chat, messaging and phone as well as email, and you want it all in one product.
- You run help centres in many languages or for several brands.
- You need many occasional users (light agents) without paying full seats.
- You expect to grow into a large, complex support operation.
Pick Freshdesk if:
- Support is mostly email and you want SLAs and routing at the middle tier.
- You want cheaper AI: a large block of included AI sessions and a $29 copilot.
- You want enterprise controls (sandbox, audit logs, skill-based routing) at $89 rather than custom pricing.
- You occasionally need part-time agents and like day passes.
When neither fits
Both are built for teams with real ticket volume. If you're a small business answering a few dozen requests a week, a full help desk can be more than you need, and per-agent pricing adds up as people join. A simple alternative is a small ticketing app of your own: a form that creates tickets, a list with statuses and owners, notes, and a knowledge base page. Mythex builds web apps like this by chatting with AI, with a database and logins when the app needs them, and publishes to a URL in one click. Our helpdesk ticketing system guide walks through it, and how to build a knowledge base covers the help-centre side.
Be honest about the trade-off: you won't get phone routing, SLA reports or a trained AI agent out of the box, and you maintain it yourself. Once support is a team with targets, Zendesk or Freshdesk is the better choice. If you're torn between chat-first tools instead, see Intercom alternatives.
Verdict
At the entry and middle tiers, Zendesk and Freshdesk cost the same per agent, so choose on direction: Zendesk for more channels in one product, Freshdesk for more help desk depth and SLAs. At the top, Freshdesk Enterprise is cheaper than Zendesk Suite Professional, and its AI add-ons cost less. Use both 14-day trials with a real week of tickets, and include your expected AI volume when you compare the bills.
