Intercom Alternatives: 6 Support and Chat Tools Compared

Intercom alternatives compared: Zendesk, Help Scout, Freshdesk, HubSpot, Crisp and tawk.to. Seat prices, AI agent costs and who each tool suits best.

The main Intercom alternatives are Zendesk for a complete multi-channel help desk, Help Scout for small teams that want a simpler shared inbox with chat, Freshdesk for ticket-first support with AI sessions included, HubSpot Service Hub if your CRM is already HubSpot, Crisp for flat per-workspace pricing, and tawk.to for free live chat. Intercom itself is still one of the strongest options if you want an AI agent answering most questions in chat. People usually switch because of seat costs, per-outcome AI costs, or because they need less than Intercom offers.

What Intercom offers today

Intercom combines a chat Messenger, a shared inbox, ticketing, a help centre and its AI agent, Fin. As of September 2026:

  • Essential: $29 per seat a month, billed annually. Fin, the Messenger, a shared inbox, ticketing, a public help centre and pre-built reports.
  • Advanced: $85 per seat a month, billed annually. Multiple team inboxes, workflow automation, round-robin assignment, a multilingual help centre and 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 per seat a month, billed annually. SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multi-brand Messenger and help centre, and 50 free Lite seats.
  • Fin AI agent: $0.99 per outcome on every plan. Fin can also be bought on its own, with no seats, subject to a minimum monthly commitment.

There's a 14-day trial with no card required, and Intercom advertises up to 93% off for eligible early-stage startups.

Why people look for Intercom alternatives

  1. Two meters running. You pay per seat and per Fin outcome. That's fair when the AI saves agent time, but it can be hard to budget.
  2. More than you need. A small site that wants a chat bubble and an inbox may not need workflows, multi-brand help centres or SLAs.
  3. Email-first teams. Some teams handle most support by email and want a tool built around that.
  4. Budget. Early-stage teams may want free or flat-priced chat until volume grows.

How we compared

We compared the publicly stated features, plan limits and prices on each vendor's own pricing pages as of September 2026. We didn't do hands-on testing and left out claims we couldn't confirm on the vendors' sites. Help Scout's page switches between monthly and annual prices, so check which one you're seeing. Crisp's prices exclude VAT.

Zendesk: the complete help desk

Zendesk covers email, chat, messaging and phone in one system. As of September 2026, Support Team is $19 per agent a month paid yearly for email ticketing; the Suite plans that add messaging, live chat, AI agents and a knowledge base start at $55 per agent a month paid yearly (Suite Team), with Suite Professional at $115. AI agents are billed per automated resolution, and there's a 14-day trial.

Pick it if you need phone, email and chat together with mature routing and reporting. For the other direction, see our Zendesk alternatives guide.

Help Scout: simpler, with fair AI pricing

Help Scout is a shared inbox that includes live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger from its Standard plan. As of September 2026:

  • Free: up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site, 100 contacts a month.
  • Paid: listed at $25 (Standard), $45 (Plus) and $75 (Pro) per user a month, with an annual discount shown. Standard and Plus have a 15-day trial with no card.
  • AI Answers: $0.75 per resolution, with monthly spending caps. Help Scout advertises three months of free, unlimited AI Answers resolutions.

Pick it if you want chat and email in one calm inbox and a lower per-resolution AI price.

Freshdesk: ticket-first with AI sessions included

Freshdesk is a ticketing system with a portal and knowledge base. As of September 2026, Growth is $19 per agent a month billed annually, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89. Every plan includes 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions, then $49 per 100 sessions. There's a 14-day trial.

Pick it if your support is mostly tickets and you want a set AI allowance in the base price.

HubSpot Service Hub: support next to your CRM

HubSpot Service Hub keeps tickets, chat and knowledge base articles next to your HubSpot contacts. As of September 2026 there are free tools, Starter from $7 per seat a month, and Professional from $90 per seat a month with a required one-time onboarding fee of $1,500. Customer Agent, HubSpot's AI agent, is on Professional and Enterprise.

Pick it if your sales and marketing already run on HubSpot.

Crisp: flat pricing per workspace

Crisp charges per workspace rather than per seat, which helps small teams.

  • Plans (as of September 2026): Free with 2 seats and a website chat widget; Mini $45 a month with 4 seats; Essentials $95 a month with 10 seats, an AI chatbot and knowledge base; Plus $295 a month with 20 seats. Extra seats on Mini and Essentials are $10 a month. Paid plans include some AI credit, and there's a 14-day trial.
  • Pick it if you have a small team and want chat, an inbox and AI without per-seat costs.

tawk.to: free live chat

tawk.to makes its live chat free with unlimited agents and chats, including ticketing, a knowledge base and a basic AI Assist tier. As of September 2026, removing its branding costs $29 a month, the advanced AI Assist starts at $29 a month, and you can hire human chat agents from $1 an hour.

Pick it if you need chat on your site today and have no budget.

Or build a simple support widget yourself

Some teams only need a contact form, a small FAQ and an AI assistant that answers from their own docs. That's small enough to build. With an AI app builder such as Mythex you can describe it in chat, and the agent builds the pages, stores messages in a dedicated Postgres database and connects the AI model you choose with your own API key. See how to build an AI chatbot app and the add AI to your app recipe.

That route suits simple, specific needs. You won't get a mature inbox, routing, reporting or a tuned support AI without building them, and you'll maintain the tool yourself. For most growing support teams, a dedicated product is the better choice. If you want to weigh it up, see build vs buy software for small business and how to build a knowledge base.

Verdict: which Intercom alternative should you choose?

  • Stay with Intercom if you want a polished Messenger and an AI agent handling a large share of conversations.
  • Zendesk if you need email, chat and phone in one mature system.
  • Help Scout if you want a simpler inbox and a lower AI price per resolution.
  • Freshdesk if your support is mostly tickets.
  • HubSpot Service Hub if your CRM is HubSpot.
  • Crisp for flat per-workspace pricing with a small team.
  • tawk.to for free live chat.

Before switching, export your conversation history and help articles, and test the new chat widget on a phone.
