Use Google Meet if you already use Gmail and Google Calendar or Google Workspace, you want free group calls that last up to an hour, and you like joining from a browser with nothing extra to set up. Use Zoom if video meetings, webinars or large calls are central to your work, you need cloud recording on a modest plan, or you meet with many people outside your company who expect a Zoom link. As of October 2026 free Meet group calls last up to 60 minutes, free Zoom meetings up to 40, and Zoom Pro costs $14.16 a month billed annually.

How we compared

We compared the plans, prices and limits on Zoom's and Google's own pricing, product and help pages as of October 2026. Prices are in US dollars. Google's pricing page showed prices in local currency in some regions, so we quote the US Business Starter price from Google's US pages and only participant and recording limits for higher Workspace plans. We didn't test call quality. We focused on what's free, what the first paid plan unlocks, recording, meeting size, and how each fits the tools you already use.

Free plans

This is where most people decide.

Google Meet free: anyone with a Google Account can host up to 100 participants. Google's help center says free hosts on a computer can run group meetings of 3 or more people for up to 60 minutes, and Google's product page says 1:1 calls have no time limit. Recording isn't included.

Zoom Basic (free): up to 100 participants and 40 minutes per meeting, local recording only, plus a small AI allowance of 3 meeting summaries and 20 AI queries a month.

For regular free calls with a few people, Meet's extra 20 minutes and uncapped 1:1s make it the better free option.

Google Meet (with Google Workspace)

Meet's paid features come through a Google Workspace plan, which also includes business Gmail, Drive storage and the rest of Workspace.

  • Business Starter: $7 per user a month on an annual plan, or $8.40 flexible, per Google's US pages. 100 participants; recording not supported; 30 GB pooled storage per user.
  • Business Standard: 150 participants, with recording.
  • Business Plus: 500 participants, with recordings saved to Google Drive.
  • Enterprise: 1,000 participants; contact sales.

Starter, Standard and Plus are limited to 300 users. See Google Workspace pricing.

What that means in practice: a consultant who needs to record client calls can do it on Zoom Pro for about $170 a year. On Google, recording needs Business Standard or higher, which also brings business email and 2 TB of pooled storage per user, so it's better value only if you'll use the rest of Workspace.

Meeting experience

Both handle the basics well, including screen sharing, in-meeting chat and joining from a phone. The differences are mostly about context.

  • Meet works well for people who live in Google Calendar and Gmail. Meetings are created from the calendar invite, and guests usually join from a browser link.
  • Zoom is a dedicated meetings platform, with paid plans for larger meetings and webinars, and it's what many people outside your company already have installed.

Recording and AI

Zoom includes cloud recording from Pro, with 10 GB of storage per user. Its AI features start small on the free plan and expand on paid plans, including unlimited meeting summaries.

Google includes recording from Business Standard, saved to Drive. Gemini AI features are part of Google Workspace plans; check Google's pricing page for which plan includes what in your region.

Large meetings and webinars

Zoom scales further at lower tiers: Business allows 300 participants and Enterprise up to 1,000. Google Workspace ranges from 100 participants on Starter to 1,000 on Enterprise. If you run big all-hands meetings or public events regularly, Zoom's plans are built around that.

Where a custom app fits

Video call tools handle the call. What often isn't handled is everything around it: people registering for a session, paying, getting reminders, and finding the recording afterwards. Many small businesses glue that together with forms, spreadsheets and email.

If that's the messy part, you can build a simple registration or booking site and keep Zoom or Meet for the call itself. With Mythex you describe the site in chat, and it builds it with a database and sign-in when needed, with a live preview, and you publish to a URL in one click. Free gives you 5 credits a day; Pro starts at $25 a month. See how to build an event registration site, or compare scheduling tools in Calendly vs Cal.com. Don't try to build video calling yourself: Zoom and Meet do it far better.

Quick checklist before you pay

Before you upgrade either tool, answer these:

  1. How long are your group calls? If they regularly run past 40 minutes, Zoom's free plan won't work; past 60, neither free plan will.
  2. Do you need recordings? Zoom includes cloud recording from Pro; Google needs Business Standard or higher.
  3. How big are your largest meetings? 100 people is the limit on both free plans and on the entry paid plans.
  4. What do your guests use? If most clients send you Zoom links, matching them avoids friction.
  5. What else do you need? If you also want business email and shared storage, a Google Workspace plan may replace several subscriptions.

Many people end up using Meet for internal calls and keeping a Zoom plan for client or public sessions.

Who should pick which

  • Free group calls under an hour: Google Meet.
  • Free 1:1 calls of any length: Google Meet.
  • Your company runs on Google Workspace: Google Meet.
  • You need cloud recording on a budget: Zoom Pro.
  • Large meetings and webinars: Zoom.
  • Lots of external guests who expect Zoom: Zoom.
  • Your company runs on Microsoft 365: consider Teams instead; see Slack vs Microsoft Teams.

Verdict

Google Meet is the better free option and the natural choice for anyone already in Google's tools. Zoom is the better dedicated meetings platform, with cloud recording from its first paid plan and room for larger meetings. If you only need calls, start free on Meet; if meetings are your business, pay for Zoom.
