Hardware Startup Inventory App: Components, Finished Units and Serial Numbers

Inventory for a hardware startup covers two worlds: the components that go into a production run and the finished units that come out of it, each moving between factory, freight and a fulfilment warehouse. Mythex builds an app from your description that tracks both, with a bill of materials, lead times, serial numbers and firmware versions, and publishes it with a real database.

Who it's for

Hardware founders and operations leads running small production batches who track components in a supplier spreadsheet, finished goods in the fulfilment partner's portal and serial numbers in a third file.

What you can build

  • Components with supplier, lead time, unit cost and quantity per build
  • A bill of materials that shows how many units current stock can make
  • Finished units by location: factory, in transit, warehouse
  • Serial number, batch and firmware version per unit
  • Returned and refurbished units tracked separately
  • Alerts when a long-lead component cannot cover the next batch

What hardware inventory must track

Components and finished units need separate records joined by a bill of materials. With quantities per build, the app can tell you how many units your stock of each component allows, and which part limits the next run. Lead time matters as much as quantity: a custom chip with a sixteen-week lead time needs ordering long before it looks low. Finished units need a location and a serial number from the day they leave the line.

  • Bill of materials per product version
  • Lead times on every component
  • Units by location with serials

Serials and firmware tie it to support

Record each unit's serial, batch and the firmware it shipped with. When support tickets are tagged with a serial, patterns show quickly: a run of returns from one batch or one firmware version points to a manufacturing or software issue weeks before individual tickets would.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not count a unit as available while it is still on a ship. Do not mix returned units into new stock without a refurbishment status. And do not rely on the fulfilment partner's numbers alone; reconcile them weekly with what you sent.

What to set up first

Enter your bill of materials and current component counts with lead times, then the finished units you have by location. Import serials from the factory's packing list. Add the low-component warning, then connect pre-orders by batch if they are in the same project.

A prompt to start from

Build an inventory app for my hardware startup. Track components with supplier, lead time, unit cost and stock, and a bill of materials with quantity per unit for each product version. Show how many units current components can build and which part is the bottleneck. Track finished units by location (factory, in transit, warehouse) with serial number, batch and firmware version, and returned units with a refurbishment status. Warn when a component's lead time means it must be ordered for the next batch.

Questions

Can it work out how many units I can build?

Yes. With a bill of materials and component counts, the app shows how many units you can build and which component runs out first.

Can I import serial numbers from the factory?

Yes. Upload the factory's packing list as CSV and each serial is created with its batch.

Can it sync with my fulfilment warehouse?

If the warehouse has an API or CSV reports, stock levels can be brought in. Otherwise you update counts from their reports.

Can my team edit the code?

Yes. Pro at $25 a month includes code editing, export and GitHub push. On Free the code is visible read-only.

Do I need to code?

No. You describe the parts, locations and rules, and change them by chatting.
