Dates that matter

Food has best-before dates and first-aid items expire. Record the date on each batch, use the oldest first, and show anything expiring in the next two months. A small discount at reception on short-dated bags beats throwing them away.

Food used for guests, charged to guests

When staff feed a guest from kennel stock, record it against the booking. It reduces stock and adds a line to the owner's invoice, so supplied food is never given away by accident.

Do not track every tin individually; count by case or bag. Do not make the weekly check long; ten key items on one phone screen get counted, fifty do not. And keep retail stock separate from kennel use so margins stay clear.
