ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini compared for building apps: coding agents, in-chat previews, app hosting and pricing as of September 2026, and who each suits.

All three can build apps, but they get you to different places. Claude is the quickest route from a chat to a small interactive app you can share, and Claude Code is its terminal-based agent for real codebases. ChatGPT pairs a general assistant with Codex, a coding agent that runs on the web, in a CLI, in your editor and on iOS. Gemini has the most "app builder" of the three in Google AI Studio's Build mode, which can add a database, sign-in and hosting on Google Cloud. As of September 2026 each has a free tier and a paid plan at about $20 a month.
How we compared
This is a comparison of publicly stated features and pricing, taken from each vendor's own pricing pages and documentation in September 2026. We did not benchmark the models or rate their code. The criteria:
- In-chat building — can you see and use the app without leaving the chat?
- Coding agent — a tool that edits files and runs commands for you
- Getting it online — database, sign-in and hosting
- Pricing — free tier, the ~$20 plan, and the heavy-use tier
Models change every few months, so we focus on the tools around them, which change more slowly.

ChatGPT
Building in the chat. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT can preview supported code blocks, including HTML pages and React components, so you can see a simple interface right away. It's fine for a calculator, a mockup or a one-page tool. There is no built-in database or hosting in the chat itself.
Codex. Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. OpenAI's pricing says Codex is part of every ChatGPT plan, and that Plus includes Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS, with cloud integrations. OpenAI's docs say it can explore and explain code, build a new feature or app, review code and fix failures, and it also runs in the ChatGPT desktop app and in Codex cloud.
Pricing as of September 2026. Free is $0. Go is $8/month and aimed at lighter use. Plus is $20/month. Pro starts at $100/month with 5x or 20x Plus's limits. Business starts at $20 per user per month, with SAML SSO and admin controls, and Enterprise is custom. See ChatGPT pricing.
Pick it if you already use ChatGPT for everything else and want one subscription that covers writing, research and a coding agent.
Claude
Building in the chat. Claude's artifacts are documents, code, dashboards or interactive tools that open in a panel next to the conversation. Anthropic says an artifact can call Claude directly, which turns it into a small AI app, and that shared AI-powered artifacts need no API keys: usage counts against each viewer's own plan. On Pro and above, artifacts can also keep persistent data, up to 20 MB of text per artifact. That makes Claude the shortest path from "I need a small tool" to a link a colleague can open.
Claude Code. Anthropic's pricing lists Claude Code on Pro and above. Anthropic describes it as an agent that works in your terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, on the web and desktop, and from Slack. Pricing as of September 2026. Free is $0 and includes artifacts and running code. Pro is $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 a year). Max starts at $100/month with 5x or 20x Pro's usage. Pick it if you want to turn an idea into a small working tool inside the chat, or you are a developer who wants an agent in the terminal.
Gemini
Building in the chat. Google lists Canvas among the features of the free Gemini plan.
Google AI Studio. The more relevant tool for app building is Build mode in Google AI Studio. Google's docs say it creates a full-stack web app (a React frontend with a Node.js runtime), or a native Android app in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose that you can publish to the Play Store. It can provision a Firestore database, add Firebase sign-in including "Sign in with Google", sync both ways with GitHub, download as a ZIP, and deploy to Cloud Run. Cloud Run and paid models can add costs.
Coding agents. Google AI Pro and Ultra include higher limits for Jules, Google's asynchronous coding agent, and for Google Antigravity.
Pricing as of September 2026. Free is $0. Google AI Plus is $4.99/month. Google AI Pro is $19.99/month with 4x the free plan's limits, higher Jules limits and entry Antigravity limits. Pick it if you want the most complete free path from a prompt to a hosted app, you're comfortable with Google Cloud, or you need an Android app.

A few honest limits apply to all three. Chat previews are for trying ideas, not for running a business on. Coding agents assume you can read a diff, run a project locally and choose hosting. And model rankings move quickly: the leader on coding benchmarks this month may not be the leader next quarter, so pick the tool whose workflow suits you.
The part a chatbot doesn't do for you
A real app needs more than code. It needs a database that keeps data between visits, somewhere to run the server, secrets kept out of the browser, a domain, and a way to roll back a bad change. General chatbots leave most of that to you (AI Studio is the partial exception, on Google Cloud). If you're a developer, that's fine. If you're not, it's where most projects stall. Where Mythex fits

Before you choose
- Give each the same task. "A page where I can add bookings and see them in a list" shows quickly how each handles data.
- Ask where the data lives. If the answer is "in your browser", it's a demo, not an app.
- Check the cost of heavy weeks. All three meter usage; the $20 plans have limits.

Which is best for coding: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
All three can write working code, and the best one depends on how you work. As of September 2026 ChatGPT's coding agent is Codex, Claude's is Claude Code, and Google offers Jules, Antigravity and the Build mode in Google AI Studio. Try the same small task in each free tier before you pay.
Can ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini build a complete app with a database and login?
Google AI Studio's Build mode comes closest out of the box: it can set up a Firestore database, Firebase sign-in and deploy to Cloud Run. ChatGPT and Claude write the code, and their coding agents can build full apps in a project folder, but you choose where the database and hosting live.
How much do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cost for coding?
As of September 2026 all three have free plans. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are $20 a month and both include their coding agents; Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month and includes higher limits for Jules and Antigravity. Heavier users pay $100 or more a month on each.
Do I need to know how to code to build an app with a chatbot?
For a small interactive page, no: all three can preview simple apps in the chat. For an app with users, stored data and a real address, you either learn some setup (hosting, a database, keys) or use an AI app builder that handles those parts for you.
